Located on Mombasa Island, the city can be traced back to the 11th century.
Settlements began to thrive here due to the excellent deep-water harbor and
its protected position.
The most exotic part of Mombasa is the Old Town. Here, narrow alleys
lined by mosques and cramped old houses slope down to the bustling harbor.
Shopping
Vendors offer a selection of arts and crafts on the pier. In the Old
Town you may find beautiful Zanzibar-style chests and carved soapstone
items. The Akamba Wood-Carvers’ Village offers thoUSAnds of carved
wooden articles. |
Cuisine
Local cuisine includes excellent seafood and spicy stews and game such
as eland, gazelle, and impala. One of the best-known restaurants in East
Africa is the Tamarind. |
Other Sights
Old Dhow Harbor. This busy place is crowded with
traditional boats (dhows).
Nyali Resort Area. A stretch of white sand beaches, with a string
of resort hotels.
Mamba Village. A crocodile farm of more than 10,000.
Shimba Hills National Reserve. Less than an hour from
Mombasa, this is probably Kenya’s most underrated wildlife refuge.
Golf
Mombasa Golf Club. The front course is the most
interesting to play because of the surrounding Indian Ocean. |
