Synonymous for
nearly a century with the kind of lifestyle only limitless wealth
can buy, Palm Beach is a small island town of palatial homes and
gardens. In the 1890s, after Henry Flagler brought his East Coast
railroad south from St. Augustine, he built two luxury hotels on
this secluded, palm-filled island. Eager to become part of the
Palm Beach elite and enjoy its aloofness from mainland and
mainstream life, tycoons, sports aces, aristocrats, rock stars and
CIA directors have flocked here. Joe Kennedy, father of John,
Robert and Edward, bought the Kennedy Compound here in 1933. Worth
Avenue, located on the southern boundary of the town, offers
designer stores and high-class art galleries; it is filled with
some of the most upscale stores and restaurants anywhere in the
country. The most appealing aspect of the street is its
architecture; its stucco walls, Romanesque facades and passageways
lead to small courtyards. Miniature bridges cross non-existent
canals and spiral staircases climb to the upper levels. The
exclusive Everglades Club, built by Addison Mizner, an unemployed
architect when he arrived in Palm Beach in 1918, was inspired by
the medieval buildings he had seen around the Mediterranean.
